(ThyBlackMan.com) The radical right came after NBC Sportscaster Bob Costas, as he spoke in support of comments made by an African-American sportswriter, Jason Whitlock, as they also did yours truly. We had expressed discontent with the gun violence that has run amok in the cities of urban America. The death of still another accomplished black athlete, Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend Casandra Perkins, should once again prove handgun violence is exacerbated by lax gun laws.

Whitlock spoke out against gun issues and the NFL’s handling of Jovan Belcher’s suicide/murder and gun issues in his Sunday FoxSports.com column. During Roland Martin’s podcast, he likened the NRA to the Ku Klux Klan and tied the group to the dangerous street culture that unfortunately dominates “so many black youths.” Whitlock went on to say, “You know, I did not go as far as I’d like to go because my thoughts on the NRA and America’s gun culture — I believe the NRA is the new KKK. And that the arming of so many black youths, uh, and loading up our community with drugs, and then just having an open shooting gallery, is the work of people who obviously don’t have our best interests [at heart].” Unfortunately the radical right believes any attempt at gun control is a slap at Second Amendment rights. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

I stand by my assertion as expressed in my previous ThyBlackMan article, titled: Why Gun Control Has Nothing to Do With the 2nd Amendment.. Because these self-appointed arbiters of the Second Amendment (the right to bear arms), and the gun lobby, mostly bolstered by the NRA, thinks every episode of gun violence is the exception as opposed to the rule.

My trouble is with that same rationale espoused by the constitution that branded all blacks as 3/5 of a human. We live in an America today that is viewed as a land of opportunity for all. It is not just for those that bear an affinity to an antiquated concept that allows cowards such as George Zimmerman to murder an innocent victim, Trayvon Martin. They hide themselves behind a states asinine “stand your ground” law.

I agree with Whitlock as he states emphatically in the same article: “I think it’s obvious if you’ve traveled abroad, and traveled to countries where they have legitimate gun laws, that we don’t have to have what we have in America, where people somehow think a gun enhances their liberty, and that people somehow think a gun makes them safer.” What kind of society becomes complacent with a statistic that says the Number 1 cause of death for African-American males between 13 and 24 is homicide?

Most murders in the United States are committed with firearms, especially handguns. In 2011, firearms were used in 68 percent of murders, 42 percent of robbery offenses and 22 percent of aggravated assaults, nationwide. If we are to be viewed as a loving, kind and God-fearing nation, we have got to get a handle on the gun control issue, for it surely has a handle on us.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of those who have tragically died.
In the wake of the recent death of Dallas Cowboy Jerry Brown in a car accident, why aren’t Jason Whitlock and Bob Costas calling for us to ban cars? Or, since the accident appears to be alcohol related why aren’t they calling for an alcohol ban?
The answer is simple. Because bans like that wouldn’t make sense and neither does the gun control they advocate.
As far as the comment in this article that the radical right went after them, that’s pure political posturing. A lot of ordinary folks thought Whitlock and Costas were being insensitive opportunists for a cause and called them on it. That’s the First Amendment.

There is no clear relationship between gun laws and crime. Among the states with the fewest restrictions on guns is Vermont. It is one of the safest states in the country. The places with the strictest gun laws (Chicago, New York City, California, Massachusetts, DC) have some very high crime rates. The crime rate is a people problem, not a gun problem.
I strongly disagree with the writer above who thinks that someone must be profiting from social unrest and crime. This is a fallacy. It is called the zero sum idea: the notion that if someone has it good, it must be because someone else is being deprived; or the reverse, that if things are bad among one group, another group must be benefitting. This simple-minded assumption rest on an instinctive (but erroneous) belief that somehow all the good and bad in the world somehow balances out to zero. There is no rationale for such a belief, and it makes no sense. Believe it or not, mature people do not like to see others suffer, and get no benefit out of needless pain. The best thing for me as an individual is if everyone around me is happy and prosperous; the worst is if I am surrounded by unhappy, angry people who are sick at heart, or beset by vice.
It is true that there are evil people willing to profit from any situation: the drug dealers, con men, thieves, &c. But even the evil lose in the long run, and sometimes the run is not even so long. Hurting others does not put anyone ahead of the game, really.
It is time that we all exercise humanity to each other, and accept friendship from everyone around us. We all will be better people, and will benefit.
As for handguns, they should be allowed to adults who are qualified by training and a clean record. I am not against reasonable qualifications, meaning training in safety and the law. A clean record is necessary, because the best predictor of behavior is the past behavior of the individual.
A fair and reasonable licensing system for handguns helps society as a whole, for several reasons. It deters crime, because a criminal is then not always sure that he is taking on a helpless victim. Second, it encourages people to avoid criminal ways, which will mean an end to their own gun rights. This is why people who have gone to the trouble to get legal permits seldom commit gun crimes: they are selected in the first place for clean records, and they want to keep their own records clean. That helps even someone who choses not to own a gun. It is a win-win situation for society.

its very simple my “brother”, JK, i have one and you’re not him. if we outlaw guns then only the criminals will have them, plain and simple.

Private gun ownership stops 2.5 milliom crimes each year. Jason Whitlock comparing the NRA to the KKK shows he is completely ignorant of the facts. Guns don’t kill black Americans. Black Americans kill black Americans. It is easier to blame the guns than to blame a broken society.

Compassion for people, and the desire to reduce needless murders should be applauded. I am with you on your concern here. Unfortunately, you have not done your research, or you have decided to paint a less than accurate story in order to further an agenda you support.
Please go back and look at the percentage of those gun-related crimes that were committed with legally owned and registered firearms. Also show us the research on the number of crimes that have been stopped as a result of legal firearms.
Young people of any color killing each other is horrible. But the majority of those murders are committed with illegally owned firearms. And please don’t assume that all guns will go away with restrictions….because the criminalization or marijuana is the easiest comparison to make there. It’s more widely used than ever, and its banned.
It’s ignorant to think, or to profess that legal gun owners are responsible for the mess you described above. Simply put, gun bans will not work because criminals, by the very meaning of the word, don’t obey the law.

I’m sorry dude, but yes, any gun legislation is a slap in the face of the second amendment. Gun control IS a slap in the face of the second amendment.
What is it about liberals such as yourself that gun laws are the only laws a criminal will obey? What on earth makes you think that if he didn’t have a gun he wouldn’t stab her to death, poison her, put her in a car and drive into the river, etc?
What will it take to get you to understand that ill will doesn’t care about right or wrong, legal or illegal?
Murder is already a crime, and he killed her anyway. You think he would obey any gun law beforehand?

That is the question you should be asking the african american leaders of America. You should ask why? Why do so many young black men die of homicide? Is it drugs? Guns? Poverty? Rap Music? Why are black men dying by guns? It isn’t the guns, it is parenting. Black males between the ages of 13 to 24 are learning this from somewhere, and not getting a true moral sense of what is right and what is wrong. Why is the black community so complacent?
