Beautiful Black Women, BIGNESS is Dying!!
(ThyBlackMan.com) this interesting video, the author is sounding the alarm to all women who are big, beautiful and proud of it. She might be speaking to those who don’t feel the need to eat right or to go to the gym because they don’t want to sweat out their hair. She might also be talking to all of us who eat whatever grandma puts on the kitchen table because it tastes good and don’t think for a second about whether the food is good for us. Then, years later, when we’ve lost a limb from diabetes or fallen over dead for some random reason, we can’t quite figure out why.
It turns out that many of “us” are dying, every single day, from ailments that could have been easily prevented.
I know these problems well, as I still love my soul food, sugar, salt, fat, pork and everything else that my doctor tells me not to eat. My family has a long history of high blood pressure, heart disease, alcoholism and pretty much everything else you could have in your family. I’m doing better by going to the gym and running three miles every day, but it’s always an uphill battle. I also proudly tell my doctor that I don’t drink or smoke as he tells me that I need to stop eating pizza at 2 o’clock in the morning.
What I also notice is that many of my sisters are just as bad as I am when it comes to doing what they need to do when it comes to managing their physical health. I had a conversation with a big, beautiful woman in her mid-twenties that I mentor, who told me that she was having chest pains. She told me that she didn’t want to exercise because it would sweat out her hair. I then had to tell her that if she’s not careful, her hair is going to look really nice at her funeral.
The point was not to be mean or to hurt her feelings, it was to tell the truth (I can proudly say that she listened and started exercising). We have to start teaching our kids to eat right and we have to eat better ourselves. We must also encourage young women to engage in physical activity so that they can get into the habit of staying in shape. My daughters that played sports are in very good health today because the foundation was laid for them many years ago. I didn’t know back then that it would make all the difference.
It’s time for us to start rethinking our approach to health and being proactive when it comes to preventing serious illness.
