(ThyBlackMan.com) Did you know children whose fathers aren’t involved in their lives are nine times more likely to not graduate from high school, ten times more likely to use illegal drugs and 20 times more likely to have behavioral disorders. These statistics can be disheartening. However, there is a group that is working to change this. That  group is The Fathers’ Support Center of St. Louis, MO under the direction of Halbert Sullivan.

The Fathers’ Support Center (FSC) was founded in 1997 and it opened its doors in 1998. The Fathers’ Support Center has provided a number of services to men who want to learn to be a responsible father and are committed to a strong family relationship.

The founder and CEO of the center, Halbert Sullivan, saw the problem of absent fathers daily in his job as a social worker in St. Louis high schools. “Our communities desperately need fathers involved in their children’s lives,” he says. “We give men the information, skills and resources to change their  behavior and help create positive outcomes for children. However, while our clients are fathers, everything we do is focused on making a difference in children’s lives.

The Fathers’ Support Center brings families together and works to keep them intact. They address the everyday problems of absentee and non-involved fathers. The goal is to assist and guide men in becoming good fathers and participating fully in their child’s life. They offer a six week comprehensive program that participants must commit to for one year.

The organization prepares fathers to become financially, emotionally and spiritually equipped to play a significant role in their children’s lives. The men receive assistance with personal development skills, job readiness/retention and job placement. They also have Father’s Rap which includes personal responsibility, manhood, education, visitation and communication skills.

Halbert Sullivan says that, “Fathers are the missing link in impoverished families .We can take them from the grips of despair and show them that they don’t have to sit there alone.” The core purpose of the Father Support Center is to connect men with their families, to build bonds with their families and to teach men to really be men and to step up to the plate and take responsibility.

The Father’s Support Center is not simply another non-for-profit, but an organization that is actually making a difference after serving nearly 9,000 families for the past 14 years.
