Job Corps: The Other Option.

(ThyBlackMan.com) As a parent I understand the worry and concern regarding the future of one’s child’s education. Statistics show that those with more training and a college education are normally in a higher income bracket.

This sounds pretty simple to some. But we all know that college is not for everyone.  Even for those that may be prepared and willing to attend a university, financial barriers may stand in the way of them doing so.

But other options are available. The Job Corps Program offers free education and training that helps young people learn a career, earn a high school diploma or GED and find and keep a job.  Young people from 16- 24 years old that meet the financial guidelines and other qualifications most likely can  attend.

Prior to working as an admissions counselor for Job Corps myself, I must admit that at first I mistakenly thought Job Corps was for troubled kids.  Actually it is just the contrary.  Before being accepted into the program a background check is made with the local police department. All potential students cannot have felonies or warrants on their record.

Once your child is accepted there are many advantages to joining Job Corps. For starters there are a number of training programs depending on the school’s location.  Job Corps offers training in construction, automotive, machine repair, finance and business services, health care, hospitality, information technology, manufacturing, renewable resources and many more. All training programs are aligned with industry certifications and are designed to meet the requirements of today’s careers.

For those students lacking their high school diploma, depending on their age they can receive their GED or high school diploma, along with their vocational training and certifications. In addition to receiving their education students will also participate in life skills training and social skills training.  Career services are also offered assisting them with resume preparation, interviewing skills and job development and placement.

Job Corps is not just a fly by night school.  It has been serving the community since 1964. With the high cost of higher education and a lagging job market for everyone Job Corps just may be the solution for some.

So if you are concerned with the future of your child’s education, looking into the Job Corps Program may be a smart move.

I work at a community college and we have several students who are Job Corp students as well. I must agree…as I’ve seen them become some of our best students. Many people do associate them with being troubled. Thanks for this affirmation!
