(ThyBlackMan.com) Though, I am a young woman; I love football. I was never a big fan of the San Diego Chargers, but I had a close connection to the team. The former running back for the team, LaDainian Tomlinson graduated from Texas Christian Universityin my hometown of Fort Worth,Texas and he attended Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church. I frequented the institution on many occasions and always have been a fan of the NFL star. Another team member on Charger’s roster that I loved was Junior Seau. I was on Facebook and a friend emailed me, and asked had I heard about his death. I immediately went to looking for sources, and TMZ.com was the first to report that Junior Seau committed suicide. Junior Seau was 43 years old.

Reading through the future Hall of Famer’s biography via online, I learned that as a young man he and his brothers had to sleep in a garage to survive. Junior Seau is from the Polynesian culture that comprises of three traits practiced by Samoans, Tongans, Hawaiians, and Cook Islanders—society,  customs, and language. As his mother called to GOD on a video right after he died, she stated, “…GOD, Give me power. Give me strong.”

Those words hit me right in chest. I felt her family’s pain. My brother died in my arms when I was six years old. I will never forget the moment when my mother walked in to the house; she was never the same. Death has a profound effect upon people. Junior Seau had a story and it was told through the lens of football. I read some posts on Facebook in which people stated that he was selfish for taking his own life. My question, what would you do if that were your family member or someone close to you. I believe that we have seen more than ten people die (of celebrity status) under the age of 50 for a reason. This country needs to wake up and see itself.

Who would have thought, that this week, Junior Seau would take his own life? I didn’t. He was a college legend, a member of the #55 Club at his alma mater—USC, a 12-time pro bowler, and he is a member of the 1994 San Diego Charger’s Super Bowl Team. And, Junior Seau is the eighth player to commit suicide from that roster in 94’.  I thought that was compelling and mysterious as I read through articles about the football star. I will never understand why people choose to take their own lives, but I do know it is for a reason. It is not up to me to judge, but to write about the situation and move on.

Today, I say we all need to pray not for ourselves but the world. We need to recognize the signs of depression in our own inner circles. The African American community has always been afraid of the word therapy. However, I can say that it saved my life. I am only in my thirties, and I know that it has had a life changing effect on me. Do yourself a favor and realize that depression is a sickness. And, we all know that suicide is a sin—just as any other sin listed in the Bible.

Now, if you can judge someone based on their sins…then I would definitely like to know when you were declared perfect in God’s eyes.

We all need to continue to pray for the Seau family, and realize that to have a relationship with the heavenly father is the best one that you will ever have in this lifetime.
