(ThyBlackMan.com) Will Smith is the consummate professional. The actor, rapper, producer, family man, and philanthropist is simply known as the Fresh Prince to Generation X. As a teenager I will never forget Will Smith as a rapper. He and DJ Jazzy Jeff were the cool kids back in the day. If we’re not bobbing your head to Parent’s Just Don’t Understand, in the early nineties, then what were you doing? Their partnership was very important to Hip-Hop. In doing research for this article, I was intrigued by learning that Will Smith lost all of his wealth before he even made it to the TV screen.
During Will Smith’s years as a rapper, he was careless, and did not pay his taxes. The IRS garnished a lot of his earnings. The important notation about 
this is that Will Smith learned from his mistakes. I mean we all can look at Young Buck, former front-man with G-UNIT, and only wish that he had called Will Smith for some advice in regard to finances. Despite making some bad decisions, Will Smith’s career took off right after his run-in with the IRS. He was offered a starring role on the hit TV show, The Fresh Prince of Bellaire.
The show aired on Mondays @7 PMon NBC, and I was always right in front of the TV. Finally, African Americans had another TV show that we could relate to back in the day (honestly, I missed the Cosby Show). And, now I will just move on, because we all know what is broadcast on television today. Will Smith starred in that series for years, and met his future wife on the set, Jada Pinkett-Smith. The two wed after the show’s run. Needless to say, their marriage has outlasted many inHollywood. And, Will Smith has also fathered three children, and still on top of his game as an actor.
No one needs to look at Will Smith’s resume to say if he deserves acting nods. He is that good. I have seen him in several movies including, I am Legend, Six Degrees of Separation, Enemy of State, Ali, Bad Boys, Bad Boys II and Men and Black. Will Smith’s movies have grossed over 5 billion dollars in sales worldwide–a huge accomplishment. He commands $100 million dollars per movie. Will Smith is one the A-list actors inHollywood, and he is African American. I think that after doing research on this talented young man, that one could say that he will definitely be around for a long time.
There have been many who have started rumors about his marriage and questions of why his children are in the entertainment business. However, I will say that despite whatever is going on in his personal life he is taking care of business. To many times we as onlookers make judgments and do not look at our own circumstances. I believe that Will Smith understands his place in society, and continues to push through despite the ups and downs of life.
I am looking forward to his new moving coming out in 2013, entitled, After Earth.
