(ThyBlackMan.com) The Public Polling Policy poll released Friday shows Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich relatively unchanged while Ron Paul is up 6 points since last week’s PPP poll of South Carolina voters.

GOP Ron Paul continues to do well with young voters and independent voters. In contrast, the Texas congressman only garnered 10 percent of voters ages 45 and over.

A total of 17 percent of the voters surveyed identified themselves as independent voters, thus Ron Paul will not have the high number of  independent voters that helped him to a second place finish in New Hampshire.

Mr. Gingrich gained a percentage point, finishing with 24 percent of the votes while Mr. Romney dropped a point to 29 percent.

“Mitt Romney’s still the favorite in South Carolina,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “Supporters of Rick Santorum, Ron Paul, and Rick Perry would have to move toward Newt Gingrich in the final week to change that.”

The poll asked voters if they would be uncomfortable with having a Mormon president in Mitt Romney, a total of 23 percent of the voters said they would have a problem with his religion.

Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum remained relatively unchanged in the poll, finishing with 14 percent of the votes in third place. Rick Santorum is counting on the strong evangelical Christian voter presence in South Carolina to help him gain some last minute momentum and get a top-tier finish in the Palmetto state.

Texas Governor Rick Perry finished the PPP poll in fifth place with 5 percent of the votes. The poll shows that his decision to skip New Hampshire and court South Carolina voters has not lead to more support.

The new PPP poll was conducted among 803 likely South Carolina Republican primary voters statewide between January 11th and January 13th with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
