In a Puff of Smoke… “P-diddy, Yes Puff Daddy”

(ThyBlackMan.com) In a previous post, (Un)Holy Hip Hop?!!, I spoke out against Christians who have condemned Holy Hip Hop and Gospel Go-Go to a place of no return.  The argument on which I made my case is that since music, much like man, was originally created with a Godly purpose; it, much like man, can be redeemed and called back to that purpose again despite its dabbling into deviance.

But if I’m honest with myself, I have to confess that I’ve carried something hypocritical to that effect around in my heart for quite a while now.  There has always been one individual whose embodied Hip Hop that I’ve carried  contempt for.  Through all of my wavering back and forth between fan and critic of rap, this disdain of mine has remained constant.  Through it all, though I haven’t written Hip Hop off, I have written Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs a.k.a “P. Diddy” up for a one way trip to hell.

Another little diddy –
Puff’s gone with the wind.

‘Mortals are a mere breath, the powerful but an illusion; on a balance they rise; together they are lighter than air.’
Psalm 62:10

‘…You have no idea what your life will be like tomorrow.  You are a puff of smoke that appears briefly and then disappears.’
James 4:14

‘The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God:  God is not in all his thoughts.  His ways are grievous; they judgments are far above out of his sight:  as for all his enemies he puffeth at them.  He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved:  for I shall never be in adversity.  His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud:  under his tongue is mischief and vanity.’
Psalm 10:4-7

I just don’t like the swagger of this dude.  To me, he’s like the Pied Piper and Red Riding Hood rolled into one in that he is brazenly leading an entire generation to hell in a hand basket through his actions and the music he produces.  His lifestyle and “freedom” to do as his will pleases inspire and drive people to aspire towards not only what he’s accomplished but how he’s accomplished it as well.

So I suppose my rationale is that since he’s done so much (in my eyes) to tear down the Kingdom of God, he should remain in the desolation he’s created.  He may rock a cross on his chain and I may not know his heart, but the fruit of his labor speaks loudly.

‘Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.’ – James 3:12

SO… I just bore a dark part of my soul.  For the majority of my walk in rap, I’ve expected and desired that this dude will go to hell.  He typified to me the type of person that could not… rather SHOULD not make it to the new heaven and new earth for all the dirt he’s done in the here and now.

But God has been working on me.  As he prepares me for the next level of my ministry, He has convicted me.  What if I have an opportunity to minister to this brother?  Would I reserve my speech for the sake of what I feel he deserves?  Will I pull a Jonah on God?  If so, then I may already be sitting in my whale.  Until I fully repent from my mindset, how can God send me further into a ministry where I may very well meet self-appointed apprentices, disciples if you will, of Sean Combs?

Will I refuse to render unto them a witness to the Gospel of Christ – a message that is not mine to determine who hears  but rather, one that is to be spread to all indiscriminately?  Irrespective of a person’s past or present, all are worthy of redemption and have a divine purpose to fulfill.  After all, if He ever truly repents and turns earnestly to Christ, that may very likely become an uncharted conversion for the disciples of Combs as well.
