(ThyBlackMan.com) For Christian singles, every day brings the opportunity to do the right thing or the wrong thing.

How do we choose? What do we base our decisions on? How do we look at each new situation and pick the course that agrees with our faith?

As adopted sons and daughters of God, we have an obligation to act in a way that brings honor to our Father. Sometimes the choice is obvious. Other times it seems more gray–less clear-cut. Then what do we do?

We can only make Christ-honoring decisions to the degree that we know the mind of Jesus. The way to do that is to acquaint ourselves with his principles, through reading the Bible and exploring our faith.

Jesus’ ways are not hidden. In fact, the Gospels make it very clear what he expects, how he judges, and what standards he uses.

For a Christian, the Ten Commandments are the foundation for both our personal and business life. In Luke 10:27, Jesus distilled those down to two commands:
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind ; and, Love your neighbor as yourself.”

If we love our neighbor as we love ourself, we will not cheat our neighbor, lie  to him, take advantage of him, or abuse him in any way. To do the right thing means we must treat our neighbor with respect, an increasingly rare attitude in today’s culture.

So who is my neighbor?
Our neighbors include our family, friends, complete strangers, coworkers, customers, and even our competitors. When we act with honesty and fairness toward our neighbor, we do the right thing.

As Christians, however, we have to be careful to get our ethics from Scripture, not from the current trends in society. No matter how others act or think, we have a clear directive.

Paul tells us in Galatians 6:7:Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” That applies to the reaping of women, corporations, churches and countries too. This verse makes it clear that every action has consequences.

God’s inescapable law
For the person who is righteous, this law of sowing and reaping is the surest way to do the right thing. Good actions bring good results. Deceitful actions bring bad results. This law is inescapable. Sometimes it takes months or even years to work out, but it always does.

The earlier in life we obey this law, the happier and more successful we’ll be. Integrity can’t be faked. You can’t promise one thing and deliver another, in business or in personal relationships.

Is it possible for you to do the right thing? The Holy Spirit will give you discernment and a strong instinct for God’s ways. Once cultivated, this habit becomes second nature.

On our own, we’re incapable of always making the best choice, but under the guidance of the Spirit, we surrender to God and let him make the right choices through us.
